Wayne Rooney fears he could be sold by Manchester United for £40million – that’s the bizarre story doing the rounds this morning, the latest episode of which comes from the Daily Mirror.
The paper claims that Rooney fears United are ready to sell him and
that this is largely put down to what it describes as the “virtual
disintegration” of Rooney’s relationship with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Rooney was only named as a substitute for United’s 3-2 win over
Fulham on Saturday and although he came on midway through the second
half he had to go off with a leg injury and will be out for a month.
The Mirror adds that Sir Alex feels Rooney’s commitment and
performances do not justify the wage of over £200,000 a week he receives
from the club. Rooney famously asked for a transfer in the autumn of
2010 and looked set to leave for United’s local rivals Manchester City
in a £50million deal until Sir Alex pulled out the stops and persuaded
him to sign a new deal with the club which guarantees he will be its
highest earner.
United now have Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez
to choose from as strikers as well as Rooney along with young Chilean
Angelo Henriquez who arrived last week and who is expected to see some
first-team football this season, most likely in the Capital One Cup.
However, the paper kicks the Rooney story into the long grass by
suggesting that while United are ‘preparing the ground’ for a sale, any
transfer will not take place until the summer.
