Manchester United have completed the signing of Robin van Persie from Arsenal.
The 29-year-old Dutchman has completed his medical, agreed personal
terms and signed for United on a four-year contract until the end of
June 2016.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told the club’s official website:
“Robin is a world-class striker with a proven record in England and in
European football. His talents need no introduction to our fans – he has
scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his
former club. His movement, finishing and all-round ability are
outstanding.”
Van Persie said: “It’s an honour to sign for Manchester United. I am
looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers,
bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for
the biggest trophies in the game. I can’t wait to get started.”
No fee has been disclosed although reports have claimed that United
will pay Arsenal around £24million. Van Persie’s salary is estimated at
around £200,000 a week – £10million a year.
United’s announcement brings to an end the van Persie transfer saga
which began late last year. The Arsenal skipper was under contract until
June 2013 but it was revealed that he had refused to speak to the
Gunners about a new deal until the end of the season. A brief meeting
was held in May but despite the offer from Arsenal of a deal worth
£130,000 a week van Persie issued a statement in July in which he said
he would not be signing a new deal with Arsenal.
Manchester City and Juventus were
both strongly linked with bids for the striker but the Dutchman has
rejected overtures from both clubs in favour of a move to United.
