United's battle to snap up the 19-year-old in turning into something of a
saga with conflicting reports emerging about the player's interest in a
switch to Old Trafford.
Red Devils officials have been working
around the clock to secure a deal for the Brazilian starlet for the last
fortnight with Sir Alex Ferguson known to be desperate to sign the all
action midfielder.
However, the Scot isn't prepared to match Sao
Paulo's asking price with a fee in the region of £30m being mooted for
the youngster who is rated as one of the biggest talents in South
America.
An opening bid of around £20m has already been knocked
back by his club, and Ferguson has now sent chief scout Jim Lawlor and
club secretary Jon Alexander to Brazil to try and thrash out an
agreement by the end of next week.
United's hopes of wrapping up a
deal quickly haven't been helped by Lucas' refusal to hold talks about
the move until after the Olympics are over, with his focus for now on
trying to win a gold medal with his country.
Sao Paulo director
Adalberto Baptista has muddled the waters further by insisting that the
player, who has scored 26 goals in 104 appearances for since making his
debut in 2010, is not interested in a switch to England.
His
comments however, somewhat contradicts the remarks made yesterday by his
own vice-president Joao Paulo de Jesus Lopes, who claims talks were
still ongoing.
Baptista said: "There are no negotiations going
on. Everybody knows that we got an offer for him, and rejected it. It's
also known that Lucas doesn't want to leave. The only person keeping the
expectations alive is his agent.
"The decision is final. There will always be great teams going after great players.
"This
mismatch between the European and Brazilian transfer window makes it
hard for national clubs, and we have to deal with that."
